The story behind DT

DT honors USAF Staff Sgt. Timothy P. Davis, killed on February 20, 2009 in Afghanistan. Like every Hero WOD, it’s done in memory of a service member who died in the line of duty. Along with Murph, it’s one of the most programmed Hero WODs in boxes. Take a moment before you start to remember the man it’s named after.

Strategy for DT

DT punishes your grip and lower back. The goal: never leave the bar on the floor for more than a few seconds. The times above are indicative benchmarks.

  • Rounds 1–2: each movement unbroken if you can, short breaks between movements.
  • Rounds 3–5: break the deadlifts (6-6) and cleans (5-4) before your grip goes.
  • Push jerks: short, fast dip, don’t let them turn into push presses.

Scaled versions of DT

The weight should let you get through at least the first round without dropping the bar. Check your push jerk max with the 1RM calculator. Keep all 5 rounds if you can: dropping the load preserves the spirit of the workout better than cutting volume.

  • Scaled: 115 / 75 lb (52.5 / 35 kg)
  • Beginner: 95 / 55 lb (43 / 25 kg), or 3 rounds
